Glen Hope PA electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical contractor or tradesman is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Glen Hope PA. For instance, some students will begin by searching for schools that are close to their residence. When they have found some that are within commuting range, they will pick the one with the lowest tuition. Even though location and cost are significant, they are not the sole factors that should be examined. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, along with their job placement and graduation rates. Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Glen Hope PA electrician on power line poleThere are several approaches to obtain electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Glen Hope PA. You may enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. In many cases these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states to become licensed or if you intend to become certified. Following are short explanations of the three most prevalent programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally offered by Pennsylvania technical and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards students who would like to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require two years to complete and are offered by Pennsylvania junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some Pennsylvania colleges, but are less favored at four years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be performed prior to licensing. For that reason, most students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Prerequisites

Glen Hope PA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Glen Hope PA can perform a vast array of functions, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in most states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but normally around four to five years of experience is required in order to take the licensing examination. The exams commonly assess electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be acquired in several specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually includes 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you pick not only furnishes a strong academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you might need to pass in the future.

Glen Hope PA student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have contemplated is choosing an electrician online program to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online schools are becoming more prevalent as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not totally internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require some attendance on campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes can be attended online, internet learning might be a more practical alternative for individuals that have limited time for schooling. And as a bonus many online training programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their traditional competitors. Travelling costs from Glen Hope PA are also reduced and a portion of the study materials can be accessed online also. Each of these benefits can make electrician online trade schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our questions to ask checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Glen Hope PA electrician schoolsNow that you have made a decision to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to focus your training options. Because there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Glen Hope PA area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each school must satisfy. The initial two that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that needs to be an option that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be important when making your decision, there are additional variables that need to be considered also. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to assess prior to selecting an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician vocational schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Verify that the Glen Hope PA school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you receive a quality education, it can help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, some states require that the electrician training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate may signify that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It could also indicate that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Glen Hope PA graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician technical programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Glen Hope PA area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical technician you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Glen Hope PA electrical contractor if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Glen Hope residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with several of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Glen Hope PA, confirm that the programs you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.

Classes need to be small in size and every student must have their personal equipment to train with. Classroom instruction needs to offer a real-world frame of reference, and the curriculum should be up-to-date and conform with industry standards. Programs vary in duration and the kind of credential provided, so you will have to ascertain what length of program and credential will best fulfill your needs. Each training program provides different options for certification also.
