Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Holbrook PA electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to receive electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Holbrook PA. You can choose a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. In many cases these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states in order to be licensed or if you want to earn certification. Bellow are brief explanations of the 3 most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by Pennsylvania technical and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards individuals who wish to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require 2 years to complete and are provided by Pennsylvania community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at certain Pennsylvania institutions, but are less popular at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be carried out prior to licensing. Because of that, the majority of students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Guidelines

Holbrook PA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Holbrook PA can undertake a wide range of tasks, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but commonly around four to five years of practical experience is required before taking the licensing examination. The exams usually test electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional way for an electrician to identify her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and can be obtained in numerous specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases involves 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician tech school that you choose not only delivers a solid educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may be required to take in the future.

But since the rest of the classes may be attended online, internet learning may be a more practical alternative for students that have minimal time for education. And as an added benefit many online schools have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their traditional competitors. Commuting expenses from Holbrook PA are also lessened and a portion of the study materials can be available on line also. All of these advantages can make online electrician vocational schools more economical and accessible. And a number are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Holbrook PA electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to refine your school options. Because there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Holbrook PA area, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must satisfy. The initial 2 that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be a feature that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your decision, there are other variables that need to be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to analyze prior to selecting an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician technical schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance electrical technology. Confirm that the Holbrook PA program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you acquire a quality education, it can help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate might signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It may also suggest that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Holbrook PA students obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician technical programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical businesses or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Holbrook PA area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Holbrook PA electrical company if they can give you some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Holbrook home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with some of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Holbrook PA, verify that the programs you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.
