Marble PA electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is finding an electrician trade school near Marble PA. But with numerous technical schools to choose from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the right one? Especially because there are so many variables to examine. For instance, some students will begin by looking for schools that are close to their home. Once they have found some that are within driving distance, they will choose the one with the lowest tuition. Although location and cost are significant, they are not the only things that need to be considered. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, as well as their graduation and job placement rates. These and other qualifications should influence your ultimate judgment when picking an electrician training school. We will address that checklist in greater detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s talk a little bit about becoming an electrician and the training options that are accessible.

Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Marble PA electrician on power line poleThere are multiple options to get electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Marble PA. You can choose a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. Frequently these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship, which are required by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you intend to become certified. Bellow are brief summaries of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically provided by Pennsylvania vocational and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards students who want to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require 2 years to complete and are provided by Pennsylvania community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain Pennsylvania institutions, but are less popular at four years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be carried out before licensing. For that reason, many students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Prerequisites

Marble PA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Marble PA can carry out a wide range of services, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but commonly about four to five years of prior experience is needed in order to take the licensing exam. The exams usually evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional method for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be obtained in various specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually includes 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician tech school that you choose not only furnishes a strong academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may need to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Programs Online

Marble PA student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have looked at is enrolling in an electrician online program to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online schools have become more popular as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this situation they are not totally internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require some attendance on campus to obtain hands-on practical training. But since the remainder of the classes can be accessed online, distance learning can be a more convenient choice for students that have minimal time for education. And as an added benefit many online training programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Travelling costs from Marble PA are also reduced and some of the study materials may be available online as well. Each of these advantages can make electrician online trade schools more affordable and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will address in our due diligence checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Marble PA electrician schoolsNow that you have made a decision to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to narrow down your training options. Because there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Marble PA area, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must satisfy. The first two that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your selection, there are other variables that must be considered also. Below is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to assess prior to selecting an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician trade programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Confirm that the Marble PA school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you obtain a quality education, it can assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, many states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may signify that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It could also mean that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Marble PA graduates secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician vocational programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Marble PA area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Marble PA electrical company if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Marble home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to several of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Marble PA, check that the schools you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.

Classroom instruction should offer a real-world context, and the training program should be current and in-line with industry standards. Wintergatan

Wintergatan (Swedish pronunciation: [²vɪntɛrˌɡɑːtan], Milky Way) is a Swedish folktronica band from Göteborg. Martin Molin and Marcus Sjöberg were previously part of the former band Detektivbyrån. The band uses a variety of unconventional instruments including the Modulin, a self-invented Theremin, a self-built punch-card music box, a slide projector, a Musical Saw, and a typewriter for use as percussion.

The band's members all play various instruments but have various primary specializations. Martin Molin specializes in the vibraphone as well as the electronic instruments that define Wintergatan's sound, Evelina Hägglund specializes in keyboard instruments, David Zandén specializes in bass, and Marcus Sjöberg specializes in drums.[4]

Between December 2014 and March 2016, the band uploaded several YouTube videos featuring Martin Molin documenting the construction of a music box that uses marbles to play instruments. The machine is powered by hand, and works by raising steel marbles through the machine into multiple feeder tubes, where they are then released from height via programmable release gates, falling and striking a musical instrument below. Instruments played by marbles striking them include a vibraphone, bass guitar, cymbal, and emulated kick drum, high hat and snare drum sounds using contact microphones. The music score is stored on two programmable wheels that utilize Lego Technic beams and stud connectors to trigger armatures to release the marbles. A final music video showing the machine in use was released in 2016.[5][6][7][8]
