Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, as well as their graduation and job placement rates. Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Mertztown PA electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to get electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Mertztown PA. You can select a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at a few schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states in order to be licensed or if you intend to become certified. Bellow are brief descriptions of the three most typical programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by Pennsylvania technical and trade schools and require approximately a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards students who wish to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take 2 years to complete and are offered by Pennsylvania junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain Pennsylvania colleges, but are less preferred at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be performed before licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Guidelines

Mertztown PA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Mertztown PA can undertake a vast array of tasks, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally about 4 to 5 years of prior experience is needed in order to take the licensing exam. The exams commonly test general knowledge and electrical theory, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and can be obtained in various specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually includes 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician tech school that you select not only furnishes a solid academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may need to take in the future.

Mertztown PA student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you may have contemplated is choosing an electrician online school to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online training programs are becoming more popular as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician schools require partial attendance on campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the rest of the classes may be accessed online, distance learning may be a more convenient choice for individuals that have limited time for education. And as a bonus numerous online degree programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their on campus competitors. Travelling expenses from Mertztown PA are also lessened and a portion of the study materials may be accessed on line as well. Each of these benefits can make electrician online tech schools more economical and accessible. And a number are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Mertztown PA electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to refine your training options. Because there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Mertztown PA area, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The first two that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be important when making your determination, there are other variables that need to be taken into account also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to assess before selecting an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician trade programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance electrical technology. Confirm that the Mertztown PA school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you acquire a quality education, it can help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It may also signify that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Mertztown PA graduates acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician training programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician businesses or labor unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Mertztown PA area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical technician you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Mertztown PA electrical contracting company if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Mertztown home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to several of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Mertztown PA, check that the schools you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
