Rices Landing PA electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is finding an electrician trade school near Rices Landing PA. But with so many vocational schools to select from, just how do you approach making sure that you enroll in the best one? Especially since there are a number of points to consider. For instance, some potential students will commence by looking for schools that are nearby their home. Once they have identified a few that are within commuting range, they will pick the one with the lowest tuition. Even though cost and location are significant, they are not the only qualifications that must be examined. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, along with their graduation and job placement rates. These and other qualifiers should influence your ultimate judgment when choosing an electrician training school. We will cover that checklist in greater detail later in this article. But to begin with, let’s talk a little bit about becoming an electrician and the educational options that are available.

Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Rices Landing PA electrician on power line poleThere are several options to get electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Rices Landing PA. You can enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three options. Frequently these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you intend to become certified. Bellow are brief summaries of the three most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by Pennsylvania technical and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards students who would like to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require 2 years to finish and are provided by Pennsylvania junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at certain Pennsylvania colleges, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be performed before licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Requirements

Rices Landing PA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Rices Landing PA can undertake a vast array of duties, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically about 4 to 5 years of practical experience is needed in order to take the licensing examination. The exams usually evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional way for an electrician to identify her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be acquired in various specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases entails three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you select not only provides a solid academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might need to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Training Classes Online

Rices Landing PA student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have considered is selecting an online electrician school to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online schools have become more accepted as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this instance they are not completely internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require some attendance on campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the rest of the classes may be attended online, distance learning might be a more convenient option for students that have minimal time for education. And as an added benefit many online schools have a reduced tuition cost compared to their traditional competitors. Commuting expenses from Rices Landing PA are also reduced and some of the study materials may be accessed online as well. All of these advantages can make electrician online vocational schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our questions to ask checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Rices Landing PA electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to refine your school options. Since there are numerous electrician tech and trade schools in the Rices Landing PA area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each program must satisfy. The initial 2 that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your determination, there are other factors that need to be considered also. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to research prior to choosing an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician trade programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Make certain that the Rices Landing PA school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you acquire a superior education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, a number of states require that the electrician training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It might also mean that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Rices Landing PA grads obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician training programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Rices Landing PA area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Rices Landing PA electrical company if they can provide some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Rices Landing residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to a few of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Rices Landing PA, confirm that the schools you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.

You originally came to this website due to an interest in Electrical Training and wanting more information on the topic Classes For Electrician. But as we have covered in this article, there are several factors that you will need to assess and compare among the training programs you are looking at. It’s a must that any electrical tech school that you are assessing includes a good deal of hands-on training. Classes should be small in size and each student should have their personal equipment to train with. Classroom teaching should offer a real-world frame of reference, and the course of study should be current and conform with industry standards. Courses vary in length and the kind of credential offered, so you will need to determine what length of program and degree or certificate will best satisfy your needs. Every program offers unique possibilities for certification as well. Probably the best approach to research your short list of schools is to visit each campus and talk with the students and faculty. Take the time to monitor some classes. Inspect the campus and facilities. Make certain that you are confident that the program you choose is the best one for you.
