Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, as well as their graduation and job placement rates. Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Options

Robesonia PA electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to receive electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Robesonia PA. You can choose a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. In many cases these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states to be licensed or if you wish to become certified. Following are short summaries of the 3 most common programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically provided by Pennsylvania technical and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are geared towards individuals who would like to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take 2 years to complete and are provided by Pennsylvania community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at certain Pennsylvania colleges, but are less favored at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be performed prior to licensing. For that reason, most students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Criteria

Robesonia PA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Robesonia PA can carry out a wide range of functions, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but usually around four to five years of practical experience is needed in order to take the licensing examination. The exams usually evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional way for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be earned in many specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually includes three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you choose not only furnishes a strong academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may be required to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Schools Online

Robesonia PA student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you may have contemplated is choosing an electrician online school to earn a certificate or degree. While online training programs have become more popular as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require partial attendance on-campus to obtain hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes may be attended online, internet learning might be a more accommodating choice for individuals that have limited time for education. And as a bonus numerous online degree programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus alternatives. Commuting expenses from Robesonia PA are also reduced and some of the study materials can be available online also. All of these advantages can make electrician online vocational schools more affordable and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our due diligence checklist.

Points to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Robesonia PA electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to narrow down your school options. Since there are numerous electrician tech and trade schools in the Robesonia PA area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must meet. The initial 2 that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your decision, there are other factors that must be taken into account also. Below is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to analyze prior to selecting an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician trade programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Confirm that the Robesonia PA school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you obtain an excellent education, it may help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Also, many states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It could also suggest that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Robesonia PA students secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician trade programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Robesonia PA area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical specialist you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Robesonia PA electrical company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your Robesonia residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to some of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Robesonia PA, check that the schools you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.

Training programs vary in duration and the type of credential offered, so you will have to ascertain what length of program and certificate or degree will best satisfy your needs. Each training program offers different options for certification as well. Probably The ideal means to research your short list of schools is to check out each campus and speak with the teachers and students. Invest some time to monitor some classes.
