Rochester Mills PA electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to learning to be an electrical tradesman or contractor is finding an electrician trade school near Rochester Mills PA. But with so many technical schools to pick from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the best one? Particularly since there are so many variables to evaluate. For example, some students will begin by looking for schools that are close to their home. After they have identified several that are within driving distance, they will select the one with the least expensive tuition. Even though cost and location are important, they are not the sole qualifications that must be evaluated. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, as well as their graduation and job placement rates. These and additional qualifications should contribute toward your ultimate decision when choosing an electrician training school. We will cover that checklist in more detail later in this post. But first, let’s review a little bit about becoming an electrician and the training choices that are offered.

Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Options

Rochester Mills PA electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to obtain electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Rochester Mills PA. You may enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three options. Often these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states in order to become licensed or if you wish to become certified. Bellow are brief descriptions of the three most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally provided by Pennsylvania technical and trade schools and require approximately a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards students who wish to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve two years to finish and are offered by Pennsylvania junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain Pennsylvania institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be carried out prior to licensing. Because of that, many students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Guidelines

Rochester Mills PA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Rochester Mills PA can carry out a wide range of services, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in most states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but normally around four to five years of practical experience is required in order to take the licensing exam. The exams commonly test electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional method for an electrician to identify her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be acquired in various specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually entails 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician vocational school that you pick not only provides a solid academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might need to take in the future.

Driving expenses from Rochester Mills PA are also lessened and a portion of the study materials can be accessed online also. Each of these benefits can make electrician online vocational schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our due diligence checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Rochester Mills PA electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to focus your school options. Because there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Rochester Mills PA area, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must meet. The first two that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your selection, there are additional variables that must be taken into account as well. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to research before selecting an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician trade programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Verify that the Rochester Mills PA program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you obtain a superior education, it can help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, many states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate might suggest that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It might also signify that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Rochester Mills PA grads obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician training programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical contractors or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Rochester Mills PA area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical specialist you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Rochester Mills PA electrical contractor if they can provide some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Rochester Mills home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to some of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Rochester Mills PA, verify that the programs you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
