For example, some prospective students will start by looking for schools that are nearby their home. Once they have located a few that are within driving range, they will select the one with the most affordable tuition. While location and cost are significant, they are not the sole qualifications that must be examined. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, along with their graduation and job placement rates. Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Shrewsbury PA electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to obtain electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Shrewsbury PA. You may choose a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. Frequently these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states to be licensed or if you want to earn certification. Bellow are short explanations of the three most typical programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually provided by Pennsylvania trade and technical schools and take approximately a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards students who want to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take 2 years to complete and are offered by Pennsylvania community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some Pennsylvania colleges, but are less popular at four years than the other shorter programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be carried out prior to licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Requirements

Shrewsbury PA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Shrewsbury PA can perform a multitude of duties, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically about four to five years of practical experience is called for before taking the licensing exam. The exams commonly test electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be earned in numerous specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases entails 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you enroll in not only provides a solid academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might need to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Training Classes

Shrewsbury PA student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you may have looked at is choosing an online electrician school to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online training programs are becoming more prevalent as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this instance they are not completely internet based. Pretty much all electrician schools require partial attendance on campus to receive hands-on practical training. But since the remainder of the classes can be accessed online, internet learning may be a more convenient alternative for students that have minimal time for schooling. And as a bonus many online degree programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on campus alternatives. Driving expenses from Shrewsbury PA are also reduced and some of the study materials can be accessed online also. All of these benefits can make electrician online tech schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Shrewsbury PA electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to narrow down your training options. Considering that there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Shrewsbury PA area, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must satisfy. The first 2 that we discussed were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that needs to be an option that your final school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your selection, there are other factors that must be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to research before selecting an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician vocational schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Confirm that the Shrewsbury PA program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you acquire an excellent education, it may assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, some states require that the electrician training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It may also mean that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Shrewsbury PA graduates secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician trade programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Shrewsbury PA area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical tech you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Shrewsbury PA electrical company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your Shrewsbury home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with several of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Shrewsbury PA, verify that the schools you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
