Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

Okreek SD electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to get electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Okreek SD. You may enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at a few schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states to become licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Following are brief summaries of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally offered by South Dakota vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards students who want to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require two years to finish and are provided by South Dakota junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some South Dakota colleges, but are less popular at four years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be completed before licensing. Therefore, most students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.
