Crab Orchard TN electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to learning to be an electrical tradesman or contractor is locating an electrician trade school near Crab Orchard TN. But with numerous technical schools to pick from, just how do you approach making certain that you enroll in the ideal one? Particularly because there are so many factors to examine. For example, many potential students will start by looking for schools that are nearby their residence. Once they have identified some that are within commuting range, they will decide on the one with the most affordable tuition. While cost and location are of importance, they are not the sole factors that should be examined. Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, in addition to their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifications should help mold your final decision when selecting an electrician trade school. We will address that checklist in more detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s review a little bit about being an electrician and the educational options that are offered.

Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Crab Orchard TN electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to receive electrician training in a trade or technical school near Crab Orchard TN. You may enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Often these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship, which are required by the majority of states to be licensed or if you wish to become certified. Bellow are brief descriptions of the three most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically provided by Tennessee technical and trade schools and take approximately a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards those who want to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take two years to finish and are provided by Tennessee community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some Tennessee institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be performed prior to licensing. Because of that, many students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Requirements

Crab Orchard TN electrician wiring boxElectricians in Crab Orchard TN can perform a wide range of duties, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in most states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but usually around four to five years of prior experience is required in order to take the licensing exam. The exams typically evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and can be acquired in various specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician trade school that you pick not only delivers a solid academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might need to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Training Classes Online

Crab Orchard TN student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have looked at is selecting an electrician online school to earn a degree or a certificate. Even though online training programs have become more prevalent as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this instance they are not completely internet based. Pretty much all electrician training programs require some attendance on-campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the remainder of the classes may be attended online, distance learning may be a more accommodating choice for students that have limited time for schooling. And as an added benefit numerous online training programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their traditional competitors. Commuting expenses from Crab Orchard TN are also minimized and a portion of the study materials can be accessed online as well. All of these benefits can make online electrician vocational schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Crab Orchard TN electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to refine your training options. Considering that there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Crab Orchard TN region, it’s essential to have a checklist of criteria that each program must meet. The first 2 that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that must be a feature that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be important when making your decision, there are other factors that need to be considered also. Below is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to assess before selecting an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician trade schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Make certain that the Crab Orchard TN program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you obtain a superior education, it may help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states require that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate could signify that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It could also signify that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Crab Orchard TN graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician technical programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical contractors or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Crab Orchard TN area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical technician you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Crab Orchard TN electrical contractor if they can provide some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Crab Orchard home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to several of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Crab Orchard TN, verify that the schools you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.

Classroom instruction needs to provide a real-world context, and the curriculum should be up-to-date and conform with industry standards. Crab Orchard, Tennessee

Crab Orchard's position in a gap in the Crab Orchard Mountains made it a gateway to the Cumberland area as early as the late 18th century. Pioneers passing through the area named it for its abundance of wild crab apple trees.[7] In the 1780s, a road was built through the gap to help provide protection for travelers migrating from East Tennessee to the Nashville area.[8]

The historian J. G. M. Ramsey reported several Cherokee, Creek, and Shawnee attacks at "the Crab-Orchard" during a period of heightened tensions between Native Americans and encroaching Euro-American settlers in the early 1790s. Around 1792, a small band of troops led by Captain Samuel Handley was attacked by a mixed group of Cherokee, Creek, and Shawnee at Crab Orchard, ending in Handley's capture.[9] In April 1794, a group of travelers was ambushed by a band of Creeks, killing early Cumberland County settler Thomas 'Big Foot' Spencer. A few weeks later, a Lieutenant McClelland was attacked and routed by a band of Creeks at Crab Orchard.[10][11]

In the late 18th century, as Cherokee attacks subsided, the Walton Road was built as part of the stage road system connecting the Knoxville and Nashville areas. The road passed through Crab Orchard, bringing a steady stream of travelers and migrants to the area. Around 1800, Sidnor's Inn opened at Crab Orchard, with Bishop Francis Asbury being among its earliest guests. In 1827, Robert Burke, whose wife operated a tavern at what is now Ozone established the Crab Orchard Inn, which remained open until the early 20th century.[12]
