Oneida TN electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is finding an electrician trade school near Oneida TN. But with numerous technical schools to choose from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the ideal one? Especially because there are a number of points to consider. For example, some potential students will start by looking for schools that are close to their residence. Once they have identified a few that are within driving distance, they will decide on the one with the lowest tuition. While cost and location are significant, they are not the sole factors that must be evaluated. Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, along with their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifications should influence your ultimate decision when picking an electrician training school. We will talk about that checklist in more detail later in this post. But first, let’s talk a little bit about being an electrician and the training options that are available.

Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Oneida TN electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to receive electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Oneida TN. You can enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three options. In many cases these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by most states in order to become licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Bellow are brief descriptions of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by Tennessee vocational and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are geared towards those who wish to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require 2 years to complete and are provided by Tennessee junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain Tennessee institutions, but are less favored at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be carried out prior to licensing. Because of that, most students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Criteria

Oneida TN electrician wiring boxElectricians in Oneida TN can undertake a vast array of tasks, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically about 4 to 5 years of experience is required before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically test electrical theory and general knowledge, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be earned in many specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually entails 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you pick not only furnishes a strong academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might be required to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Training Classes

Oneida TN student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have considered is selecting an electrician online school to earn a degree or a certificate. While online schools are becoming more prevalent as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not entirely internet based. Pretty much all electrician schools require some attendance on-campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the remainder of the classes may be attended online, distance learning might be a more practical alternative for individuals that have minimal time for education. And as an added benefit numerous online schools have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their traditional alternatives. Commuting costs from Oneida TN are also lessened and some of the study materials may be accessed on line as well. All of these advantages can make electrician online tech schools more affordable and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will address in our questions to ask checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Oneida TN electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to focus your school options. Because there are numerous electrician tech and trade schools in the Oneida TN region, it’s essential to have a checklist of criteria that each program must meet. The first 2 that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your decision, there are additional factors that must be taken into account as well. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to assess prior to selecting an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician trade programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Confirm that the Oneida TN school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you acquire a superior education, it can help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate might signify that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It could also indicate that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Oneida TN students obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician technical programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical contractors or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Oneida TN area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical specialist you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Oneida TN electrical company if they can provide some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Oneida residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to some of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Oneida TN, check that the programs you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.

Classroom instruction needs to offer a real-world frame of reference, and the curriculum should be current and in-line with industry standards. Every program offers different options for certification as well. Perhaps the best means to research your short list of schools is to check out each campus and speak with the teachers and students.
