Anthony TX electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is finding an electrician trade school near Anthony TX. But with so many vocational schools to choose from, just how do you go about making certain that you enroll in the right one? Especially since there are so many variables to consider. For instance, many students will begin by looking for schools that are close to their residence. After they have found several that are within driving range, they will select the one with the cheapest tuition. Although location and cost are of importance, they are not the sole qualifications that should be examined. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their graduation and job placement rates. These and additional qualifications should influence your final decision when selecting an electrician school. We will cover that checklist in greater detail later in this article. But first, let’s talk a little bit about being an electrician and the educational options that are offered.

Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Anthony TX electrician on power line poleThere are three general approaches to get electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Anthony TX. You may select a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Frequently these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states to become licensed or if you want to become certified. Following are short descriptions of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally offered by Texas technical and trade schools and require approximately a year to complete. They furnish a good foundation and are geared towards individuals who wish to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require 2 years to complete and are offered by Texas community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at some Texas colleges, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be performed before licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Guidelines

Anthony TX electrician wiring boxElectricians in Anthony TX can carry out a vast array of services, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally about four to five years of experience is needed in order to take the licensing exam. The exams typically test electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to identify her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be obtained in several specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually entails three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you choose not only furnishes a solid educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may need to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Schools

Anthony TX student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you may have looked at is enrolling in an electrician online school to earn a degree or a certificate. Even though online schools are becoming more popular as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this instance they are not completely internet based. Pretty much all electrician training programs require some attendance on campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes may be accessed online, internet learning may be a more accommodating option for individuals that have limited time for education. And as a bonus numerous online training programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus counterparts. Driving costs from Anthony TX are also reduced and some of the study materials may be accessed online as well. All of these benefits can make online electrician vocational schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our questions to ask checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Anthony TX electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to focus your school options. Because there are numerous electrician tech and trade schools in the Anthony TX region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each program must satisfy. The initial two that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that must be a feature that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your determination, there are additional variables that must be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to assess before selecting an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician vocational programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance electrical technology. Make sure that the Anthony TX school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you acquire an excellent education, it can assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, a number of states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate might signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It may also indicate that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Anthony TX students secure apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician technical programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical companies or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Anthony TX area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical specialist you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Anthony TX electrical company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Anthony home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to some of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Anthony TX, confirm that the schools you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.

You originally came to this website due to an interest in Accredited Electrician Trade Schools and wanting more information on the topic Certified Electrician School. But as we have discussed in this article, there are many factors that you will need to assess and compare among the schools you are reviewing. It’s a must that any electrician training that you are reviewing includes a lot of hands-on training. Classes need to be small in size and each student must have their personal equipment to train with. Classroom teaching should provide a real-world frame of reference, and the course of study should be current and in-line with industry standards. Courses differ in duration and the type of credential offered, so you will have to decide what length of program and degree or certificate will best fulfill your needs. Each training program provides different possibilities for certification also. Perhaps the best approach to research your short list of schools is to visit each campus and speak with the students and instructors. Invest some time to attend a few classes. Tour the campus and facilities. Make certain that you are confident that the program you decide on is the best one for you. With the proper training, effort and commitment, the end result will be a new occupation as a professional electrician in Anthony TX.
