Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Godley TX electrician on power line poleThere are three general approaches to obtain electrician training in a trade or technical school near Godley TX. You can choose a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by most states to become licensed or if you want to earn certification. Following are brief descriptions of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically offered by Texas trade and technical schools and take about a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards individuals who want to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take 2 years to complete and are offered by Texas community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some Texas institutions, but are less favored at four years than the other shorter programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be performed prior to licensing. Therefore, the majority of students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Guidelines

Godley TX electrician wiring boxElectricians in Godley TX can carry out a multitude of tasks, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but usually about four to five years of practical experience is called for before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically test general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to identify her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be earned in many specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician tech school that you pick not only delivers a solid academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might be required to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Schools

Godley TX student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have contemplated is choosing an electrician online school to earn a certificate or degree. While online schools are becoming more popular as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this instance they are not entirely internet based. Pretty much all electrician schools require some attendance on-campus to obtain hands-on practical training. But since the remainder of the classes may be attended online, internet learning may be a more accommodating option for individuals that have minimal time for education. And as a bonus many online training programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on campus competitors. Commuting expenses from Godley TX are also reduced and a portion of the study materials can be accessed online as well. All of these advantages can make online electrician trade schools more affordable and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Godley TX electrician schoolsNow that you have made a decision to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to focus your training options. Because there are numerous electrician tech and trade schools in the Godley TX area, it’s essential to have a checklist of criteria that each school must meet. The first two that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be important when making your decision, there are other factors that must be taken into account also. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to assess before enrolling in an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician technical schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Make sure that the Godley TX school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you receive a quality education, it may help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Also, some states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It could also signify that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Godley TX graduates secure apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician technical programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Godley TX area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical technician you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Godley TX electrical contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Godley residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with some of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Godley TX, check that the programs you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.

But as we have discussed in this article, there are a number of factors that you will need to examine and compare between the training programs you are considering. It’s a prerequisite that any electrical training that you are reviewing includes a lot of hands-on instruction. Classes should be small in size and each student must have their own equipment to train with. Classroom teaching needs to provide a real-world context, and the course of study should be up-to-date and conform with industry standards. Programs differ in length and the type of credential provided, so you will need to ascertain what length of program and credential will best satisfy your needs. Every program offers unique possibilities for certification also. Perhaps the best way to research your short list of schools is to check out each campus and speak with the students and faculty.
