But with numerous vocational schools to select from, just how do you approach making sure that you enroll in the best one? Especially since there are so many points to consider. For example, many students will start by looking for schools that are nearby their residence. When they have found some that are within driving distance, they will select the one with the most affordable tuition. Although location and cost are significant, they are not the sole things that must be examined. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, along with their graduation and job placement rates. These and additional qualifications should contribute toward your final judgment when selecting an electrician training school. We will address that checklist in greater detail later in this article. Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Miles TX electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to obtain electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Miles TX. You can select a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three options. Often these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Following are short summaries of the three most common programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually offered by Texas trade and technical schools and take approximately a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards students who would like to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require two years to complete and are offered by Texas junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain Texas colleges, but are less preferred at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be carried out before licensing. Because of that, the majority of students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Criteria

Miles TX electrician wiring boxElectricians in Miles TX can perform a multitude of duties, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in most states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically around four to five years of prior experience is called for in order to take the licensing examination. The exams commonly evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and can be acquired in various specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually includes three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you enroll in not only furnishes a strong academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may need to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Training Classes

Miles TX student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have considered is choosing an online electrician program to earn a degree or a certificate. While online schools are becoming more prevalent as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this situation they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician schools require partial attendance on-campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes can be attended online, distance learning may be a more convenient alternative for students that have minimal time for schooling. And as an added benefit many online degree programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus counterparts. Commuting expenses from Miles TX are also minimized and some of the study materials may be accessed online as well. All of these advantages can make online electrician trade schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our due diligence checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Miles TX electrician schoolsNow that you have made a decision to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to narrow down your training options. Considering that there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Miles TX area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must satisfy. The initial two that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your final school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be critical when making your selection, there are additional variables that must be considered also. Below is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to assess prior to choosing an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician technical programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Verify that the Miles TX program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you acquire a quality education, it can assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, many states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate might signify that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It may also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Miles TX grads secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician trade programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician companies or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Miles TX area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical specialist you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Miles TX electrical contracting company if they can provide some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within driving distance of your Miles residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to several of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Miles TX, confirm that the programs you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.

You originally came to this website due to an interest in Electrician Trade School and wanting more information on the topic Electronics Trade School. But as we have discussed in this article, there are many things that you will need to assess and compare between the training programs you are considering. It’s a must that any electrical tech school that you are assessing includes a good deal of hands-on instruction. Classes need to be smaller in size and every student must have their own equipment to train with. Classroom teaching should provide a real-world frame of reference, and the course of study should be up-to-date and conform with industry standards. Courses vary in duration and the kind of credential provided, so you will need to decide what length of program and certificate or degree will best fulfill your needs. Each training program offers different options for certification also. Perhaps the best way to research your final list of schools is to go to each campus and talk with the students and instructors. Invest some time to sit in on some classes. Inspect the campus and facilities. Make sure that you are confident that the training program you pick is the right one for you. With the right training, hard work and dedication, the end result will be a new trade as a professional electrician in Miles TX.
