Ore City TX electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to becoming an electrical contractor or tradesman is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Ore City TX. But with numerous technical schools to select from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the right one? Particularly because there are so many factors to consider. For instance, some students will begin by searching for schools that are nearby their home. Once they have found a few that are within commuting range, they will choose the one with the lowest tuition. Although cost and location are of importance, they are not the sole factors that need to be evaluated. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, in addition to their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifications should contribute toward your final decision when picking an electrician school. We will discuss that checklist in more detail later in this post. But first, let’s review a little bit about being an electrician and the instructional choices that are accessible.

Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Ore City TX electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to get electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Ore City TX. You may choose a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Frequently these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by most states in order to be licensed or if you intend to become certified. Following are brief descriptions of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically offered by Texas technical and trade schools and require approximately a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are geared towards students who want to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve 2 years to complete and are provided by Texas community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at some Texas institutions, but are less popular at four years than the other briefer programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be performed prior to licensing. For that reason, most students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Guidelines

Ore City TX electrician wiring boxElectricians in Ore City TX can undertake a vast array of services, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but typically about 4 to 5 years of practical experience is required before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and can be earned in numerous specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually includes 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you choose not only delivers a solid educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you might be required to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Programs Online

Ore City TX student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have contemplated is enrolling in an online electrician school to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online training programs have become more accepted as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this instance they are not completely internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require partial attendance on campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes may be accessed online, internet learning can be a more practical option for individuals that have limited time for education. And as a bonus many online training programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on-campus alternatives. Travelling costs from Ore City TX are also lessened and some of the study materials can be accessed on line as well. Each of these benefits can make online electrician tech schools more affordable and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Ore City TX electrician schoolsNow that you have made a decision to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to focus your school options. Considering that there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Ore City TX area, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each program must meet. The initial two that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that must be an option that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be critical when making your determination, there are additional factors that must be taken into account also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to research prior to enrolling in an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician technical schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Make sure that the Ore City TX school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you receive a superior education, it may help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, a number of states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate could suggest that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It might also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Ore City TX graduates secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician trade programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Ore City TX area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical technician you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Ore City TX electrical company if they can provide some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Ore City residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with a few of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Ore City TX, check that the schools you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.

But as we have discussed in this article, there are several things that you will need to evaluate and compare between the training programs you are considering. It’s a prerequisite that any electrical training program that you are considering includes a good deal of hands-on training. Classes should be smaller in size and each student must have their own equipment to train with. Classroom instruction needs to provide a real-world perspective, and the course of study should be up-to-date and in-line with industry standards. Programs differ in duration and the kind of credential provided, so you will need to determine what length of program and credential will best satisfy your needs. Each training program provides different options for certification also.
