Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, along with their graduation and job placement rates. Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Port Bolivar TX electrician on power line poleThere are several approaches to receive electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Port Bolivar TX. You can enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. In many cases these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states to be licensed or if you intend to become certified. Following are brief summaries of the three most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by Texas vocational and trade schools and require approximately a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who would like to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve 2 years to finish and are offered by Texas junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at some Texas institutions, but are less preferred at four years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be performed prior to licensing. Because of that, the majority of students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Prerequisites

Port Bolivar TX electrician wiring boxElectricians in Port Bolivar TX can undertake a wide range of functions, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in most municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but normally around four to five years of practical experience is needed in order to take the licensing exam. The exams typically assess general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and can be acquired in many specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually entails 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you enroll in not only furnishes a solid educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might need to take in the future.

While online training programs are becoming more prevalent as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this situation they are not totally internet based. Virtually all electrician training programs require some attendance on-campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the rest of the classes may be attended online, distance learning can be a more accommodating alternative for individuals that have limited time for education. And as an added benefit numerous online training programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus competitors. Driving expenses from Port Bolivar TX are also reduced and a portion of the study materials can be accessed on line as well. Each of these benefits can make electrician online tech schools more economical and accessible. And a number are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Port Bolivar TX electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to focus your school options. Because there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Port Bolivar TX region, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each program must meet. The initial two that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your decision, there are other factors that must be taken into account also. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to assess prior to choosing an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Make sure that the Port Bolivar TX school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you receive a quality education, it may help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, many states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It might also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Port Bolivar TX grads acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician trade programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Port Bolivar TX area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical tech you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Port Bolivar TX electrical contractor if they can provide some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within driving distance of your Port Bolivar home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to a few of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the teachers and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Port Bolivar TX, confirm that the schools you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Port Bolivar, Texas

Port Bolivar (/ˈbɒlɪvər/ BOL-i-vər) is an unincorporated community located in the Bolivar Peninsula census-designated place, in Galveston County, Texas, United States state of Texas within Galveston County and part of the Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown metropolitan area. The entire peninsula was severely damaged during Hurricane Ike[1] on September 13, 2008; re-building efforts are still continuing.[2]

The US Census does not consider Port Bolivar as a separate community, so the numbers are always estimates. One real estate site suggests 1,477 as of 2014[3] while another indicates 1,907 as of July 1, 2015.[4] The estimate offered by City-Data is 1,349 as of 2013.[5] The town is home to the historic Bolivar Lighthouse, which once guided ships entering Galveston Bay.

In 1838, Samuel D Parr surveyed the land, and it was granted to him by the Republic of Texas to be called Parrsville.[6] It changed hands as Archibald Wynns and William Lawrence bought the land and developed it.[6] The land was finally bought by a company and renamed to Port Bolivar in 1893.[6]
