Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Ropesville TX electrician on power line poleThere are three general ways to obtain electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Ropesville TX. You may select a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. Frequently these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states to be licensed or if you would like to become certified. Following are short summaries of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically provided by Texas technical and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards individuals who want to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve 2 years to complete and are provided by Texas community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at certain Texas institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be performed before licensing. For that reason, most students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Guidelines

Ropesville TX electrician wiring boxElectricians in Ropesville TX can carry out a multitude of duties, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in most municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but normally around 4 to 5 years of experience is needed before taking the licensing examination. The exams commonly evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be earned in many specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases entails three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you choose not only furnishes a strong educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may need to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Schools Online

Ropesville TX student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have contemplated is selecting an electrician online school to earn a degree or a certificate. Even though online schools have become more accepted as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not entirely internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require partial attendance on campus to get hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes can be accessed online, distance learning may be a more practical option for individuals that have limited time for education. And as an added benefit many online degree programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their traditional alternatives. Driving costs from Ropesville TX are also minimized and a portion of the study materials may be available online also. All of these benefits can make electrician online tech schools more affordable and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Ropesville TX electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to focus your training options. Since there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Ropesville TX area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each program must meet. The first 2 that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that needs to be an option that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be important when making your decision, there are other factors that must be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to analyze before choosing an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician trade programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Make sure that the Ropesville TX school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you get a quality education, it can help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Also, some states require that the electrician training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate could indicate that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It might also suggest that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Ropesville TX students secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician training programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical companies or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Ropesville TX area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical specialist you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Ropesville TX electrical company if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Ropesville residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with some of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Ropesville TX, confirm that the programs you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.

You originally came to this website due to an interest in Electrician Schools and wanting more information on the topic Industrial Electrician School. But as we have discussed in this article, there are a number of things that you will need to evaluate and compare among the training programs you are looking at. It’s a prerequisite that any electrical tech school that you are assessing includes a considerable amount of hands-on instruction. Classes should be smaller in size and every student must have their own equipment to train with. Classroom instruction should provide a real-world perspective, and the curriculum should be up-to-date and in-line with industry standards. Programs differ in duration and the type of credential offered, so you will need to determine what length of program and certificate or degree will best satisfy your needs. Each training program offers unique options for certification also. Perhaps the best way to research your short list of schools is to check out each campus and talk with the teachers and students. Invest some time to attend some classes. Inspect the campus and facilities. Make certain that you are confident that the training program you pick is the right one for you.
