For example, some prospective students will commence by looking for schools that are nearby their home. Although cost and location are significant, they are not the only factors that need to be examined. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, as well as their graduation and job placement rates. Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

North Salt Lake UT electrician on power line poleThere are several options to obtain electrician training in a technical or vocational school near North Salt Lake UT. You may choose a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. Often these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by most states to become licensed or if you want to become certified. Following are brief explanations of the three most prevalent programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by Utah vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards students who wish to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take 2 years to finish and are offered by Utah junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at certain Utah institutions, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be completed prior to licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Requirements

After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but typically around 4 to 5 years of practical experience is called for in order to take the licensing examination. The exams commonly test general knowledge and electrical theory, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to identify him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be obtained in numerous specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually involves three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician trade school that you select not only delivers a strong academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might need to pass in the future.

And as an added benefit many online schools have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus alternatives. Commuting expenses from North Salt Lake UT are also lessened and a portion of the study materials may be accessed on line also. All of these advantages can make electrician online trade schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our questions to ask checklist.

Points to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask North Salt Lake UT electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to refine your school options. The first 2 that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your selection, there are additional factors that need to be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to research prior to choosing an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician trade schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Verify that the North Salt Lake UT school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you obtain an excellent education, it can help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, a number of states require that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate may signify that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It may also indicate that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist North Salt Lake UT graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician technical programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with North Salt Lake UT area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local North Salt Lake UT electrical company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your North Salt Lake residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak with some of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to some of the teachers and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near North Salt Lake UT, check that the schools you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
