Rupert VT electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical tradesman or contractor is finding an electrician trade school near Rupert VT. But with so many technical schools to pick from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the right one? Especially because there are so many variables to examine. For example, some potential students will begin by searching for schools that are close to their residence. After they have located several that are within driving distance, they will decide on the one with the most affordable tuition. Although cost and location are of importance, they are not the only qualifications that need to be evaluated. Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, as well as their graduation and job placement rates. These and other qualifications should contribute toward your ultimate decision when selecting an electrician training school. We will talk about that checklist in more detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s review a little bit about being an electrician and the educational choices that are available.

Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Options

Rupert VT electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to receive electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Rupert VT. You can enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. In many cases these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states to be licensed or if you intend to become certified. Bellow are short explanations of the three most common programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by Vermont trade and technical schools and take about a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards individuals who want to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve two years to finish and are provided by Vermont community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain Vermont institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be carried out prior to licensing. Therefore, most students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Requirements

Rupert VT electrician wiring boxElectricians in Rupert VT can perform a multitude of services, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in most municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally about 4 to 5 years of practical experience is called for in order to take the licensing exam. The exams usually test electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be acquired in various specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually involves three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician vocational school that you enroll in not only furnishes a solid educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might be required to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Training Classes

Rupert VT student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have considered is selecting an online electrician school to earn a degree or a certificate. Even though online training programs have become more prevalent as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this situation they are not entirely internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require partial attendance on campus to receive hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes may be accessed online, distance learning might be a more practical option for students that have minimal time for education. And as a bonus numerous online schools have a lower tuition cost compared to their on-campus competitors. Commuting expenses from Rupert VT are also minimized and some of the study materials can be accessed on line also. All of these benefits can make online electrician trade schools more affordable and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our due diligence checklist.

Points to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Rupert VT electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to narrow down your training options. Because there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Rupert VT area, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The first 2 that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be important when making your selection, there are additional variables that need to be considered also. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to research prior to selecting an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician vocational schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Verify that the Rupert VT program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you get an excellent education, it may help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states require that the electrician training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate may signify that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It may also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Rupert VT grads obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician vocational programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Rupert VT area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical specialist you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Rupert VT electrical company if they can provide some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Rupert home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to several of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Rupert VT, verify that the programs you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.

Classroom teaching should provide a real-world perspective, and the course of study should be current and conform with industry standards. Every training program offers different options for certification also.
