But with numerous vocational schools to pick from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the right one? Particularly since there are so many variables to examine. For instance, some potential students will begin by looking for schools that are nearby their residence. When they have located some that are within driving range, they will select the one with the most affordable tuition. Even though cost and location are of importance, they are not the only factors that need to be considered. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, along with their graduation and job placement rates. These and additional qualifiers should influence your ultimate decision when picking an electrician school. We will discuss that checklist in more detail later in this article. Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Cannelton WV electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to obtain electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Cannelton WV. You may choose a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. Frequently these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states in order to be licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Following are short descriptions of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically provided by West Virginia technical and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards those who want to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take 2 years to finish and are provided by West Virginia community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some West Virginia colleges, but are less popular at four years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be completed prior to licensing. Therefore, the majority of students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Requirements

Cannelton WV electrician wiring boxElectricians in Cannelton WV can perform a wide range of functions, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but usually about 4 to 5 years of prior experience is needed before taking the licensing examination. The exams usually test general knowledge and electrical theory, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be acquired in many specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician tech school that you enroll in not only furnishes a strong academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might need to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Schools Online

Cannelton WV student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you may have contemplated is selecting an online electrician program to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online training programs are becoming more popular as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this situation they are not totally internet based. Virtually all electrician training programs require partial attendance on-campus to receive hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes may be attended online, internet learning may be a more practical alternative for students that have limited time for education. And as a bonus many online degree programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Travelling expenses from Cannelton WV are also lessened and some of the study materials may be available on line as well. All of these benefits can make electrician online vocational schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Cannelton WV electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to focus your school options. Because there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Cannelton WV area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each school must meet. The initial 2 that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your decision, there are additional factors that need to be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to assess before selecting an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician vocational programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Verify that the Cannelton WV school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you get an excellent education, it may assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, some states require that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate could indicate that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It could also indicate that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Cannelton WV graduates acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician vocational programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Cannelton WV area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Cannelton WV electrical company if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Cannelton home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to several of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Cannelton WV, confirm that the schools you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.

    Cannelton, West Virginia

Cannelton is an unincorporated community in Fayette County, West Virginia, United States. Cannelton is 1 mile (1.6 km) northeast of Smithers, along Smithers Creek.[2] Cannelton has a post office with ZIP code 25036.[3] The community was named for the deposits of cannel coal in the area.[4]

Cannelton was established in 1849. Cannel coal was discovered in 1848. Ben Burdette, who was working on Col. Aaron Stockton lumber enterprise on the mountain, discovered cannel coal. Cannel coal was discovered to have a very high oil content and that made it very valuable. Col. Aaron Stockton started mining cannel coal and shipping it on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. It was the first established town in Montgomery-Smithers vicinity. The first post office was established in 1876.[citation needed]

Col. Aaron Stockton was born in Princeton, New Jersey and was the grandson of Richard Stockton, who signed the Declaration of Independence. Stockton was an enterprising man. He moved his family to the Kanawha Valley soon after the War of 1812. He tried his hand at the salt industry first. Stockton hired his brother-in-law, William Tompkins, to work with him in the salt industry. However, Stockton quickly released salt was not his calling. He sold off all of his holdings to Tompkins after the first trust was established that regulated salt prices and production levels.
