For instance, many prospective students will commence by searching for schools that are close to their home. After they have found a few that are within driving range, they will pick the one with the most affordable tuition. While location and cost are important, they are not the sole qualifications that should be examined. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifications should influence your ultimate judgment when picking an electrician training school. We will talk about that checklist in greater detail later in this post. Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

Cedar Grove WV electrician on power line poleThere are several approaches to obtain electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Cedar Grove WV. You may select a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some schools, but are not as common as the other three options. Often these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states to become licensed or if you intend to become certified. Bellow are short summaries of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically provided by West Virginia technical and trade schools and require about a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards those who want to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve two years to complete and are provided by West Virginia junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain West Virginia colleges, but are less popular at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be completed prior to licensing. Therefore, the majority of students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Requirements

Cedar Grove WV electrician wiring boxElectricians in Cedar Grove WV can perform a vast array of services, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally about 4 to 5 years of practical experience is required in order to take the licensing exam. The exams commonly evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional way for an electrician to identify her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and can be acquired in many specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually involves 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you enroll in not only furnishes a solid academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might be required to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Programs Online

Cedar Grove WV student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you may have contemplated is enrolling in an online electrician school to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online training programs have become more accepted as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not totally internet based. Just about all electrician schools require partial attendance on campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the remainder of the classes may be attended online, distance learning may be a more practical alternative for students that have minimal time for education. And as an added benefit numerous online degree programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Commuting expenses from Cedar Grove WV are also lessened and a portion of the study materials can be accessed on line as well. All of these advantages can make online electrician trade schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our questions to ask checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Cedar Grove WV electrician schoolsNow that you have made a decision to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to narrow down your school options. Because there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Cedar Grove WV area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each school must meet. The initial 2 that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be important when making your determination, there are additional variables that must be taken into account also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to assess before choosing an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician technical schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Make certain that the Cedar Grove WV program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you receive an excellent education, it can help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate may indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It may also signify that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Cedar Grove WV grads secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician training programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Cedar Grove WV area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical tech you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Cedar Grove WV electrical contracting company if they can provide some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Cedar Grove residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with a few of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Cedar Grove WV, check that the schools you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
