But with numerous vocational schools to pick from, just how do you go about making sure that you enroll in the right one? Especially since there are so many variables to consider. For example, some potential students will start by looking for schools that are close to their home. Once they have located a few that are within driving range, they will choose the one with the most affordable tuition. Although cost and location are of importance, they are not the only factors that should be examined. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Covel WV electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to get electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Covel WV. You may choose a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. In many cases these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you intend to become certified. Bellow are brief summaries of the 3 most common programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually offered by West Virginia technical and trade schools and require about a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards students who would like to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take two years to complete and are provided by West Virginia community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some West Virginia institutions, but are less popular at four years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases 4 years be performed prior to licensing. For that reason, many students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Guidelines

Covel WV electrician wiring boxElectricians in Covel WV can undertake a vast array of services, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but normally around 4 to 5 years of practical experience is needed in order to take the licensing examination. The exams typically evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be earned in many specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually entails three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you choose not only provides a solid academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may need to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Schools

Covel WV student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you may have considered is selecting an electrician online school to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online schools are becoming more prevalent as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this instance they are not entirely internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require partial attendance on-campus to obtain hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes can be accessed online, distance learning may be a more convenient alternative for individuals that have minimal time for education. And as an added benefit numerous online degree programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their traditional counterparts. Commuting expenses from Covel WV are also lessened and a portion of the study materials can be available online as well. All of these advantages can make online electrician tech schools more economical and accessible. And a number are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Covel WV electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to focus your training options. Since there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Covel WV region, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each school must satisfy. The initial two that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be important when making your determination, there are other variables that need to be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to assess prior to enrolling in an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician technical schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Make sure that the Covel WV program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you receive a superior education, it can help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, many states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may signify that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It could also indicate that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Covel WV students acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician training programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical contractors or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Covel WV area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical tech you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Covel WV electrical company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Covel residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with some of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Covel WV, verify that the programs you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
