Hedgesville WV electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is finding an electrician trade school near Hedgesville WV. But with so many vocational schools to choose from, just how do you approach making certain that you enroll in the ideal one? Especially because there are so many points to consider. For instance, many students will start by looking for schools that are close to their home. After they have found a few that are within commuting distance, they will select the one with the lowest tuition. While cost and location are significant, they are not the sole factors that should be examined. Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifiers should help mold your ultimate decision when choosing an electrician school. We will cover that checklist in more detail later in this post. Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

Hedgesville WV electrician on power line poleThere are several options to receive electrician training in a trade or technical school near Hedgesville WV. You can select a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at a few schools, but are not as common as the first three options. Often these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states to be licensed or if you wish to become certified. Bellow are short summaries of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically provided by West Virginia trade and technical schools and take about a year to complete. They furnish a solid foundation and are geared towards those who want to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve two years to complete and are provided by West Virginia junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at certain West Virginia institutions, but are less popular at four years than the other shorter programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be performed before licensing. Because of that, many students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Requirements

Hedgesville WV electrician wiring boxElectricians in Hedgesville WV can perform a wide range of tasks, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in most states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but generally about four to five years of practical experience is required in order to take the licensing examination. The exams usually evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be acquired in many specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually includes three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you choose not only provides a solid academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might be required to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Training Classes Online

Hedgesville WV student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have contemplated is choosing an electrician online program to earn a certificate or degree. Although online training programs have become more accepted as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this instance they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician schools require some attendance on-campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes can be attended online, internet learning can be a more accommodating alternative for students that have limited time for schooling. And as a bonus many online training programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on-campus competitors. Commuting expenses from Hedgesville WV are also minimized and some of the study materials can be accessed online also. Each of these benefits can make online electrician trade schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our due diligence checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Hedgesville WV electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to narrow down your school options. Because there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Hedgesville WV region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each program must meet. The first two that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your determination, there are additional factors that must be considered also. Below is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to assess before enrolling in an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician vocational schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Verify that the Hedgesville WV program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you obtain a superior education, it can assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate may suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It may also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Hedgesville WV grads acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician vocational programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical companies or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Hedgesville WV area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Hedgesville WV electrical contractor if they can provide some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within driving distance of your Hedgesville home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with some of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Hedgesville WV, check that the programs you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.1% of the population.
