But with numerous vocational schools to pick from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the right one? Particularly since there are so many factors to evaluate. For example, many students will commence by searching for schools that are close to their home. Once they have located a few that are within driving range, they will choose the one with the most affordable tuition. Although location and cost are important, they are not the sole things that need to be evaluated. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, along with their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifiers should contribute toward your ultimate decision when picking an electrician trade school. We will cover that checklist in more detail later in this post. Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Rockport WV electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to obtain electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Rockport WV. You may choose a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three options. Often these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you want to become certified. Following are brief explanations of the three most prevalent programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically provided by West Virginia technical and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who want to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take 2 years to finish and are provided by West Virginia community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain West Virginia colleges, but are less favored at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be performed before licensing. For that reason, most students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Requirements

Rockport WV electrician wiring boxElectricians in Rockport WV can undertake a multitude of tasks, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but normally about four to five years of experience is required before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional method for an electrician to identify her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be acquired in numerous specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases includes three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you enroll in not only furnishes a strong academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might be required to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Training Classes

Rockport WV student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have looked at is enrolling in an electrician online school to earn a degree or a certificate. While online training programs are becoming more prevalent as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this instance they are not completely internet based. Virtually all electrician training programs require partial attendance on-campus to get hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes may be accessed online, internet learning might be a more convenient choice for individuals that have limited time for education. And as a bonus numerous online schools have a reduced tuition cost compared to their traditional alternatives. Commuting costs from Rockport WV are also minimized and a portion of the study materials can be accessed online also. Each of these benefits can make online electrician trade schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Rockport WV electrician schoolsNow that you have made a decision to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to focus your training options. Because there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Rockport WV region, it’s essential to have a checklist of criteria that each program must satisfy. The first two that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your selection, there are other factors that must be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to analyze prior to selecting an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician vocational programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Make sure that the Rockport WV school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you receive a superior education, it may help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, a number of states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate might signify that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It could also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Rockport WV grads obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician trade programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Rockport WV area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Rockport WV electrical contracting company if they can provide some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Rockport home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with several of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Rockport WV, check that the programs you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
