Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Burnett WI electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to receive electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Burnett WI. You may choose a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as common as the first three options. Frequently these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states to be licensed or if you want to become certified. Following are brief explanations of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by Wisconsin trade and technical schools and require about a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards students who would like to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve 2 years to complete and are provided by Wisconsin community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at certain Wisconsin colleges, but are less favored at four years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be performed before licensing. Therefore, many students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Prerequisites

Burnett WI electrician wiring boxElectricians in Burnett WI can carry out a multitude of services, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but usually around four to five years of prior experience is called for before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically test general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be earned in numerous specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases includes three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician tech school that you choose not only furnishes a solid academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may be required to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Training Classes

Burnett WI student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have considered is selecting an online electrician program to earn a certificate or degree. Although online schools are becoming more popular as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician schools require partial attendance on-campus to receive hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes can be accessed online, internet learning may be a more accommodating option for individuals that have limited time for education. And as an added benefit many online degree programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their traditional counterparts. Driving expenses from Burnett WI are also reduced and a portion of the study materials can be accessed on line also. All of these benefits can make online electrician trade schools more affordable and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Burnett WI electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to refine your school options. Since there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Burnett WI region, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The first 2 that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your selection, there are other factors that must be taken into account also. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to research before enrolling in an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician vocational schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Make certain that the Burnett WI program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you acquire an excellent education, it may help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate could signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It may also suggest that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Burnett WI students obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician vocational programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician contractors or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Burnett WI area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical specialist you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Burnett WI electrical company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your Burnett home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak to several of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Burnett WI, confirm that the programs you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
