Darien WI electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is locating an electrician trade school near Darien WI. But with numerous vocational schools to select from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the ideal one? Especially since there are a number of variables to examine. For example, many prospective students will commence by looking for schools that are nearby their residence. Once they have identified some that are within driving distance, they will decide on the one with the least expensive tuition. While cost and location are important, they are not the only things that need to be evaluated. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, in addition to their job placement and graduation rates. Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Darien WI electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to get electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Darien WI. You can choose a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. In many cases these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states to be licensed or if you wish to become certified. Bellow are brief explanations of the three most typical programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually offered by Wisconsin trade and technical schools and require approximately a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are geared towards students who wish to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve 2 years to finish and are offered by Wisconsin community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain Wisconsin institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be performed prior to licensing. Therefore, most students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Requirements

Darien WI electrician wiring boxElectricians in Darien WI can undertake a vast array of services, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but normally around four to five years of prior experience is required in order to take the licensing exam. The exams commonly test electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional means for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be obtained in various specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases entails three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician tech school that you select not only provides a solid educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you may need to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Programs Online

Darien WI student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you may have considered is selecting an online electrician program to earn a certificate or degree. While online training programs are becoming more accepted as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not totally internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require some attendance on-campus to receive hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes may be accessed online, internet learning might be a more accommodating choice for individuals that have minimal time for education. And as an added benefit numerous online degree programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Driving expenses from Darien WI are also lessened and some of the study materials may be accessed online also. All of these benefits can make electrician online tech schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Darien WI electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to refine your school options. Because there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Darien WI region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each program must meet. The initial two that we discussed were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be important when making your decision, there are additional factors that need to be considered also. Below is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to research before choosing an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Verify that the Darien WI program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you acquire an excellent education, it may assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, some states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It may also mean that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Darien WI grads acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician training programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Darien WI area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical specialist you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Darien WI electrical company if they can provide some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Darien residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Speak to some of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Darien WI, verify that the programs you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.

But as we have addressed in this article, there are a number of things that you will need to examine and compare among the training programs you are reviewing. It’s a prerequisite that any electrical tech school that you are considering includes a lot of hands-on training. Classes should be small in size and every student should have their personal equipment to train with. Classroom teaching should provide a real-world perspective, and the curriculum should be current and conform with industry standards. Courses differ in duration and the type of credential provided, so you will need to ascertain what length of program and degree or certificate will best satisfy your needs. Every training program provides different possibilities for certification also. Probably the best way to research your final list of schools is to check out each campus and speak with the faculty and students. Invest some time to attend a few classes. Tour the campus and facilities. Make certain that you are confident that the training program you choose is the right one for you.
