Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

La Valle WI electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to get electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near La Valle WI. You may enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. Frequently these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by most states to become licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Following are brief explanations of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically offered by Wisconsin technical and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards students who would like to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require two years to finish and are provided by Wisconsin community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at certain Wisconsin colleges, but are less popular at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be carried out prior to licensing. Therefore, many students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Prerequisites

After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically around 4 to 5 years of experience is needed before taking the licensing exam. The exams commonly test general knowledge and electrical theory, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to identify her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be acquired in many specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually includes 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician tech school that you choose not only provides a strong academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you might be required to pass in the future.

Also, many states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate may indicate that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It might also mean that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist La Valle WI students obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician trade programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical tech you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local La Valle WI electrical contracting company if they can provide some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your La Valle home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with a few of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near La Valle WI, check that the programs you are considering offer those options.
