Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Kirby WY electrician on power line poleThere are multiple options to get electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Kirby WY. You may select a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Bellow are brief descriptions of the three most common programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically provided by Wyoming vocational and trade schools and require approximately a year to complete. They furnish a good foundation and are geared towards those who want to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require two years to finish and are offered by Wyoming junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at some Wyoming institutions, but are less favored at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out before licensing. For that reason, most students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Guidelines

After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but normally around 4 to 5 years of experience is needed before taking the licensing examination. The exams typically evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be acquired in several specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician tech school that you pick not only provides a strong educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you may need to pass in the future.

Additionally bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your Kirby home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Talk with several of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.
