Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Ingalls KS electrician on power line poleThere are three general approaches to obtain electrician training in a trade or technical school near Ingalls KS. You can select a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three options. In many cases these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by most states to be licensed or if you want to earn certification. Bellow are short descriptions of the 3 most typical programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically provided by Kansas technical and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards students who want to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require two years to finish and are provided by Kansas junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some Kansas institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be completed prior to licensing. Because of that, the majority of students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Prerequisites

Ingalls KS electrician wiring boxElectricians in Ingalls KS can perform a wide range of tasks, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in most municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but generally about 4 to 5 years of prior experience is needed before taking the licensing examination. The exams typically assess electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional way for an electrician to identify her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be acquired in numerous specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually includes 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you choose not only furnishes a strong educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you may need to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Programs Online

Ingalls KS student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you may have looked at is enrolling in an electrician online program to earn a certificate or degree. Although online training programs are becoming more popular as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not entirely internet based. Virtually all electrician training programs require some attendance on campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the rest of the classes can be accessed online, distance learning can be a more accommodating choice for individuals that have limited time for education. And as an added benefit many online schools have a lower tuition cost compared to their on campus alternatives. Driving expenses from Ingalls KS are also minimized and some of the study materials may be available on line as well. Each of these benefits can make online electrician vocational schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our due diligence checklist.

Points to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Ingalls KS electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to narrow down your school options. Considering that there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Ingalls KS area, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each school must meet. The initial 2 that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be important when making your decision, there are other variables that must be taken into account also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to analyze before choosing an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Confirm that the Ingalls KS program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you get a superior education, it can assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate might suggest that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It may also signify that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Ingalls KS graduates obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician training programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Ingalls KS area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical specialist you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Ingalls KS electrical contractor if they can provide some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Ingalls home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with several of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Ingalls KS, verify that the schools you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.
