How to Enroll in the Best Electrician Trade School near Newcastle Maine

Newcastle ME electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is locating an electrician trade school near Newcastle ME. But with so many technical schools to choose from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the ideal one? Especially because there are so many factors to examine. For example, some students will begin by looking for schools that are close to their residence. After they have located a few that are within driving range, they will select the one with the lowest tuition. While location and cost are significant, they are not the sole qualifications that should be examined. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, in addition to their graduation and job placement rates. These and other qualifications should help mold your final decision when selecting an electrician school. We will talk about that checklist in greater detail later in this article. But to begin with, let’s review a little bit about becoming an electrician and the educational options that are accessible.

Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

Newcastle ME electrician on power line poleThere are several options to get electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Newcastle ME. You can enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. Often these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states to become licensed or if you want to earn certification. Following are brief explanations of the three most typical programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by Maine vocational and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards those who wish to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require two years to finish and are provided by Maine community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain Maine institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases 4 years be performed prior to licensing. Because of that, most students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Prerequisites

Newcastle ME electrician wiring boxElectricians in Newcastle ME can carry out a vast array of services, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but usually around four to five years of practical experience is required in order to take the licensing examination. The exams usually evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional method for an electrician to identify her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be acquired in many specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases includes 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician tech school that you choose not only delivers a strong academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might be required to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Schools

Newcastle ME student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have considered is selecting an online electrician program to earn a degree or a certificate. Even though online schools are becoming more prevalent as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this instance they are not completely internet based. Virtually all electrician training programs require partial attendance on-campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes may be accessed online, internet learning can be a more practical alternative for individuals that have limited time for schooling. And as a bonus many online schools have a lower tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Travelling expenses from Newcastle ME are also lessened and some of the study materials can be accessed on line also. Each of these advantages can make electrician online trade schools more affordable and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Newcastle ME electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to narrow down your school options. Since there are numerous electrician tech and trade schools in the Newcastle ME area, it’s essential to have a checklist of criteria that each program must satisfy. The first two that we discussed were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be critical when making your selection, there are other factors that need to be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to research before selecting an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician trade programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Confirm that the Newcastle ME program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you obtain an excellent education, it can help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states require that the electrician training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It could also signify that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Newcastle ME students secure apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician vocational programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Newcastle ME area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical specialist you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Newcastle ME electrical company if they can provide some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your Newcastle home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with several of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Newcastle ME, check that the schools you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
