Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, along with their graduation and job placement rates. Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

Steen MN electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to get electrician training in a trade or technical school near Steen MN. You may enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. In many cases these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states to be licensed or if you wish to become certified. Bellow are short summaries of the three most typical programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically provided by Minnesota technical and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are geared towards students who would like to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve 2 years to finish and are offered by Minnesota community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain Minnesota institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be performed before licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Prerequisites

Steen MN electrician wiring boxElectricians in Steen MN can perform a vast array of services, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally around four to five years of practical experience is needed before taking the licensing exam. The exams usually assess electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional way for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be earned in many specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases entails 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you select not only provides a strong educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you might need to take in the future.

Even though online training programs have become more accepted as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this situation they are not totally internet based. Pretty much all electrician schools require some attendance on campus to receive hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes can be accessed online, internet learning can be a more accommodating alternative for individuals that have limited time for education. And as a bonus many online training programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus counterparts. Commuting costs from Steen MN are also reduced and a portion of the study materials may be accessed on line as well. Each of these benefits can make electrician online vocational schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Steen MN electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to narrow down your school options. Since there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Steen MN area, it’s essential to have a checklist of criteria that each school must meet. The initial 2 that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your selection, there are other variables that need to be considered also. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to assess before enrolling in an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Make sure that the Steen MN school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you receive a quality education, it may assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, a number of states require that the electrician training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could suggest that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It may also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Steen MN grads secure apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician technical programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Steen MN area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical specialist you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Steen MN electrical company if they can provide some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Steen home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with a few of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Steen MN, check that the programs you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.
