How to Enroll in the Best Electrician Tech School near Neptune New Jersey

Neptune NJ electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is locating an electrician trade school near Neptune NJ. But with numerous technical schools to select from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the ideal one? Especially since there are so many variables to consider. For example, some students will start by searching for schools that are nearby their home. When they have identified a few that are within driving range, they will decide on the one with the cheapest tuition. Even though location and cost are significant, they are not the sole factors that must be evaluated. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, as well as their graduation and job placement rates. These and additional qualifiers should help mold your final decision when selecting an electrician school. We will address that checklist in more detail later in this article. But first, let’s review a little bit about being an electrician and the training options that are offered.

Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Neptune NJ electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to receive electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Neptune NJ. You can enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at a few schools, but are not as common as the other three options. Often these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship, which are required by the majority of states to become licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Following are brief explanations of the 3 most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically provided by New Jersey trade and technical schools and take about a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards students who wish to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take two years to finish and are offered by New Jersey junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some New Jersey institutions, but are less favored at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be performed before licensing. Therefore, the majority of students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Guidelines

Neptune NJ electrician wiring boxElectricians in Neptune NJ can undertake a multitude of functions, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but typically around four to five years of practical experience is required in order to take the licensing exam. The exams typically test general knowledge and electrical theory, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional method for an electrician to identify him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be acquired in many specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases involves 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you pick not only provides a strong educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might need to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Training Classes Online

Neptune NJ student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have considered is enrolling in an electrician online school to earn a degree or a certificate. While online training programs are becoming more accepted as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician schools require partial attendance on-campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the rest of the classes can be accessed online, distance learning may be a more convenient alternative for students that have limited time for education. And as a bonus numerous online schools have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus competitors. Driving expenses from Neptune NJ are also minimized and a portion of the study materials can be available online as well. Each of these benefits can make online electrician vocational schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our questions to ask checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Neptune NJ electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to narrow down your training options. Because there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Neptune NJ area, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must satisfy. The initial 2 that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that must be an option that your final school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be important when making your determination, there are other factors that need to be taken into account also. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to assess prior to enrolling in an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician vocational schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Make sure that the Neptune NJ program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you receive a quality education, it may help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, many states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate might indicate that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It may also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Neptune NJ graduates acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician trade programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Neptune NJ area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical tech you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Neptune NJ electrical contractor if they can provide some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your Neptune residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with a few of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to some of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Neptune NJ, verify that the programs you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
