Somerdale NJ electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical contractor or tradesman is finding an electrician trade school near Somerdale NJ. But with numerous technical schools to choose from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the ideal one? Particularly because there are so many variables to evaluate. For instance, many prospective students will commence by searching for schools that are nearby their residence. Once they have found a few that are within commuting distance, they will pick the one with the least expensive tuition. Although location and cost are important, they are not the only qualifications that need to be considered. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their graduation and job placement rates. These and additional qualifications should influence your ultimate decision when picking an electrician training school. We will cover that checklist in more detail later in this post. But first, let’s review a little bit about becoming an electrician and the training choices that are accessible.

Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Somerdale NJ electrician on power line poleThere are several options to get electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Somerdale NJ. You may select a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as common as the other three options. Frequently these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states to become licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Bellow are short explanations of the 3 most typical programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally offered by New Jersey vocational and trade schools and require approximately a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are geared towards those who would like to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require two years to complete and are offered by New Jersey junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at certain New Jersey colleges, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be completed before licensing. Therefore, many students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Criteria

Somerdale NJ electrician wiring boxElectricians in Somerdale NJ can undertake a vast array of services, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in most states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but commonly around four to five years of practical experience is required in order to take the licensing exam. The exams typically evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional means for an electrician to identify her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and can be acquired in numerous specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you choose not only provides a strong educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might need to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Training Classes

Somerdale NJ student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have looked at is selecting an online electrician school to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online schools are becoming more popular as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not totally internet based. Pretty much all electrician schools require partial attendance on campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes can be attended online, internet learning may be a more accommodating choice for students that have minimal time for education. And as a bonus many online schools have a lower tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Driving costs from Somerdale NJ are also reduced and a portion of the study materials may be available online as well. All of these benefits can make online electrician vocational schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our due diligence checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Somerdale NJ electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to focus your training options. Since there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Somerdale NJ region, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The first two that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be critical when making your determination, there are additional factors that must be considered also. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to research prior to choosing an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician vocational schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Make certain that the Somerdale NJ school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you receive a quality education, it can help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate may suggest that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It may also mean that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Somerdale NJ graduates acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician vocational programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Somerdale NJ area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical tech you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Somerdale NJ electrical contractor if they can provide some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Somerdale residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with several of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Somerdale NJ, check that the programs you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.
