Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Brasher Falls NY electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to receive electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Brasher Falls NY. You may choose a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some schools, but are not as common as the other three options. In many cases these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you intend to become certified. Bellow are brief descriptions of the three most typical programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally offered by New York technical and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are geared towards students who would like to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take two years to complete and are offered by New York junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain New York colleges, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be completed before licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

The exams typically test general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional way for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be acquired in many specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases includes 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam

    New York State Route 11C

New York State Route 11C (NY 11C) is a short state highway located in St. Lawrence County in the northern part of New York in the United States. NY 11C is a northern alternate route of U.S. Route 11 (US 11) between the towns of Stockholm and Lawrence that serves the hamlets of Winthrop and Brasher Falls. NY 11C briefly overlaps with NY 420 in Winthrop. Although NY 11C follows a mostly east–west routing, it is signed as a north–south route.

The current alignment of NY 11C was originally part of US 11. An alternate route of then-US 11 between Stockholm Center and Coteys Corner that bypassed the Brasher Falls area to the south was added to the state highway system on September 1, 1982, and designated as NY 11C. The alignments of US 11 and NY 11C between the two hamlets were flipped on June 13, 1992, placing both routes on their current routings.

NY 11C begins at an intersection with US 11 in the hamlet of Stockholm Center within the town of Stockholm. The highway heads to the northeast, intersecting with a local road west of the Meadowbrook Golf Club. NY 11C continues on, crossing over the west branch of the St. Regis River and entering a residential area of Stockholm known as Winthrop. In the hamlet, NY 11C overlaps with NY 420 for one block. NY 420 turns off at the center of the community and heads toward Massena while NY 11C continues northeast out of Winthrop and into the town of Brasher.[3]
