Oakland Gardens NY electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is locating an electrician trade school near Oakland Gardens NY. But with so many vocational schools to choose from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the right one? Especially since there are a number of factors to evaluate. For example, many potential students will start by searching for schools that are nearby their home. When they have found several that are within commuting distance, they will pick the one with the lowest tuition. While cost and location are of importance, they are not the sole factors that must be examined. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, along with their graduation and job placement rates. These and other qualifications should contribute toward your final decision when picking an electrician school. We will address that checklist in greater detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s review a little bit about becoming an electrician and the educational choices that are available.

Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Oakland Gardens NY electrician on power line poleThere are three general ways to receive electrician training in a trade or technical school near Oakland Gardens NY. You can enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. In many cases these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states to become licensed or if you wish to become certified. Bellow are brief summaries of the three most prevalent programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically provided by New York trade and technical schools and require about a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards those who wish to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require 2 years to complete and are offered by New York community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain New York institutions, but are less favored at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be carried out before licensing. Because of that, many students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Guidelines

Oakland Gardens NY electrician wiring boxElectricians in Oakland Gardens NY can perform a vast array of functions, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in most municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but normally around 4 to 5 years of prior experience is required in order to take the licensing examination. The exams commonly evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional method for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be acquired in many specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases entails three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you pick not only delivers a strong educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you may need to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Schools Online

Oakland Gardens NY student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have looked at is selecting an electrician online program to earn a certificate or degree. Although online training programs have become more accepted as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this instance they are not completely internet based. Pretty much all electrician training programs require some attendance on-campus to get hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes can be accessed online, distance learning may be a more convenient option for students that have minimal time for education. And as an added benefit numerous online training programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their traditional alternatives. Commuting costs from Oakland Gardens NY are also minimized and a portion of the study materials may be accessed online as well. Each of these advantages can make online electrician tech schools more affordable and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Oakland Gardens NY electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to refine your training options. Considering that there are numerous electrician tech and trade schools in the Oakland Gardens NY region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must meet. The initial 2 that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be a feature that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be important when making your decision, there are additional factors that need to be taken into account also. Below is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to analyze before choosing an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Make sure that the Oakland Gardens NY program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you receive an excellent education, it can assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, many states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It may also mean that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Oakland Gardens NY grads secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician trade programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Oakland Gardens NY area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical technician you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Oakland Gardens NY electrical contractor if they can give you some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Oakland Gardens home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with a few of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the teachers and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Oakland Gardens NY, confirm that the programs you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.

    Bayside, Queens

Bayside is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens. The neighborhood is east of Flushing and is part of Queens Community Board 11.[2]CNN Money ranked Bayside as one of the most expensive housing markets nationally when analyzing comparable detached homes throughout the United States.[3] Despite its large housing stock of free-standing homes, it nationally ranks high to very high in population density.[4][5][6] These homes give the neighborhood a similar feel to other wealthy Queens neighborhoods such as Douglaston–Little Neck and Whitestone.

Bayside's history dates back to 2000 B.C.E., when the Matinecock Native American tribe first settled there.[7] Around 1637, the Dutch West India Company encouraged Dutch farmers to settle on land grants in New Amsterdam, which was the name of New York then.[7] William Lawrence, of England, built the first permanent building, a stone farmhouse, when he settled Bayside in 1644.[7] Twenty years later, England took control of New Amsterdam, renamed it the Province of New York, and English people began settling the area.[7] When Queens County was officially established in 1683, the Town of Flushing was one of the original five towns of Queens County, and today's Bayside was within the Town of Flushing. During the American Revolutionary War, whaleboatmen from Connecticut raided the Bayside–Little Neck area, and Town of Flushing was occupied by the British military.[7]

During the 19th century, Bayside was primarily farmland, where wealthy people from Manhattan would visit it as a rural resort.[7] The Bayside House, owned by Joseph Crocheron, was well-known for its clambakes.[7] The Bayside House burned down in 1906, but Crocheron's name lives on as the namesake of the 45-acre (18 ha) Crocheron Park.[7]
