Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

Goodwell OK electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to obtain electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Goodwell OK. You can select a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three options. Frequently these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you wish to become certified. Bellow are short explanations of the three most typical programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally provided by Oklahoma trade and technical schools and require approximately a year to complete. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards those who wish to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require two years to finish and are provided by Oklahoma community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at certain Oklahoma institutions, but are less popular at four years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be performed prior to licensing. Therefore, many students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

The exams typically test electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional means for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be acquired in various specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician tech school that you choose not only provides a solid educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you might need to pass in the future.
