How to Choose the Best Electrician Technical School near Skiatook Oklahoma

Skiatook OK electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Skiatook OK. But with numerous vocational schools to pick from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the right one? Especially since there are a number of factors to examine. For instance, many potential students will commence by looking for schools that are close to their home. Once they have located several that are within driving range, they will pick the one with the least expensive tuition. Even though location and cost are important, they are not the sole things that must be evaluated. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, along with their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifiers should help mold your ultimate judgment when selecting an electrician school. We will discuss that checklist in more detail later in this article. But to begin with, let’s review a little bit about being an electrician and the training choices that are accessible.

Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Options

Skiatook OK electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to receive electrician training in a trade or technical school near Skiatook OK. You may enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three options. Frequently these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states to be licensed or if you would like to become certified. Following are short descriptions of the 3 most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically provided by Oklahoma vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards those who would like to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require 2 years to finish and are offered by Oklahoma community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at some Oklahoma colleges, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be carried out before licensing. For that reason, most students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Guidelines

Skiatook OK electrician wiring boxElectricians in Skiatook OK can carry out a wide range of tasks, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in most municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but commonly around 4 to 5 years of practical experience is needed before taking the licensing examination. The exams typically evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be earned in various specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases involves 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you enroll in not only delivers a solid academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may be required to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Schools Online

Skiatook OK student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have looked at is enrolling in an online electrician program to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online training programs have become more accepted as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this instance they are not completely internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require some attendance on-campus to receive hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes may be attended online, distance learning might be a more accommodating option for individuals that have minimal time for education. And as a bonus many online training programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus alternatives. Travelling expenses from Skiatook OK are also lessened and some of the study materials can be available on line as well. All of these benefits can make online electrician vocational schools more affordable and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

Points to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Skiatook OK electrician schoolsNow that you have made a decision to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to refine your school options. Considering that there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Skiatook OK region, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must meet. The first two that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be critical when making your selection, there are other variables that need to be considered also. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to research before selecting an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician technical programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Verify that the Skiatook OK program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you receive a quality education, it can help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate might signify that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It could also mean that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Skiatook OK grads obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician technical programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician companies or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Skiatook OK area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Skiatook OK electrical contracting company if they can provide some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within driving distance of your Skiatook residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with some of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Skiatook OK, check that the programs you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.

But as we have discussed in this article, there are many factors that you will need to evaluate and compare between the training programs you are reviewing. It’s a prerequisite that any electrician training program that you are reviewing includes a good deal of hands-on training. Classes should be smaller in size and every student should have their own equipment to train with. Classroom instruction needs to offer a real-world frame of reference, and the training program should be up-to-date and in-line with industry standards. Courses vary in duration and the type of credential offered, so you will need to decide what length of program and certificate or degree will best serve your needs. Every training program offers unique options for certification also. Probably The ideal approach to research your final list of schools is to visit each campus and talk with the faculty and students. Invest some time to monitor some classes. Inspect the campus and facilities. Make sure that you are confident that the program you select is the best one for you. Skiatook, Oklahoma

Skiatook (Skī·ǎ·tōōk or Skī·ǎ·tǒǒk versus Skī·tōōk or Skī·tǒǒk) is a city in Osage and Tulsa counties in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. It is located in the northeastern part of the state, about twenty miles north and west of Tulsa. The population was 7,397 at the 2010 census, an increase of 37.1 percent from 5,396 at the 2000 census.[3]

William C. Rogers, last hereditary Chief of the Cherokees, founded Skiatook in 1872, when he established a trading post in the Cherokee Nation just to the south of Bird Creek where the stream was easily crossed. When a post office was established in Rogers' store in the 1880s, the place was named Ski-a-took. An Osage Indian, Skiatooka, was a frequent trader at the post, so it has been suggested this may be the connection which resulted in the town's name. In 1892, the name was changed from Ski-a-took to its present form.[4]

Historical records have conflicting data as to the origin of Skiatook's name. One story is that the town was founded on land which was the home of a prominent Osage Indian, Skiatooka, and the community around his home was called Skiatooka's Settlement.
