Bryn Athyn PA electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is locating an electrician trade school near Bryn Athyn PA. But with so many vocational schools to select from, just how do you approach making certain that you enroll in the right one? Especially because there are so many variables to consider. For example, some potential students will commence by searching for schools that are close to their residence. After they have found a few that are within driving range, they will decide on the one with the lowest tuition. Although location and cost are important, they are not the sole qualifications that need to be examined. Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, in addition to their graduation and job placement rates. These and additional qualifiers should help mold your final decision when selecting an electrician school. We will cover that checklist in more detail later in this post. But first, let’s review a little bit about becoming an electrician and the training choices that are available.

Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Bryn Athyn PA electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to receive electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Bryn Athyn PA. You can choose a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as common as the first three options. Often these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states in order to become licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Bellow are short descriptions of the 3 most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by Pennsylvania vocational and trade schools and require about a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who want to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require 2 years to finish and are provided by Pennsylvania junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at certain Pennsylvania colleges, but are less popular at four years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be completed prior to licensing. Therefore, many students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Prerequisites

Bryn Athyn PA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Bryn Athyn PA can perform a wide range of services, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but normally about four to five years of experience is called for before taking the licensing examination. The exams typically test electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to identify him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and can be acquired in various specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases includes 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you pick not only furnishes a solid academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might be required to take in the future.

Although online schools have become more popular as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not completely internet based. Virtually all electrician training programs require some attendance on-campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the rest of the classes may be accessed online, distance learning may be a more accommodating alternative for students that have minimal time for schooling. And as an added benefit many online degree programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Travelling costs from Bryn Athyn PA are also minimized and a portion of the study materials can be available on line as well. Each of these benefits can make online electrician trade schools more affordable and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our questions to ask checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Bryn Athyn PA electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to focus your training options. Because there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Bryn Athyn PA area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each school must meet. The first two that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be important when making your selection, there are other variables that must be taken into account also. Below is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to assess before enrolling in an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician trade schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Confirm that the Bryn Athyn PA school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you acquire a quality education, it can help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate may suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It could also signify that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Bryn Athyn PA graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician technical programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician businesses or trade unions. Check if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Bryn Athyn PA area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical specialist you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Bryn Athyn PA electrical company if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Bryn Athyn home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to several of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Bryn Athyn PA, verify that the programs you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
