Humboldt TN electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is locating an electrician trade school near Humboldt TN. But with numerous technical schools to choose from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the best one? Especially because there are so many factors to evaluate. For example, some potential students will commence by searching for schools that are nearby their residence. When they have found some that are within commuting range, they will select the one with the lowest tuition. Although cost and location are important, they are not the only things that need to be evaluated. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifiers should help mold your ultimate judgment when selecting an electrician trade school. We will address that checklist in more detail later in this post. Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

Humboldt TN electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to obtain electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Humboldt TN. You may choose a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. Frequently these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you would like to become certified. Bellow are brief descriptions of the three most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually offered by Tennessee technical and trade schools and require approximately a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards individuals who would like to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve 2 years to complete and are offered by Tennessee junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain Tennessee institutions, but are less popular at four years than the other shorter programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be completed prior to licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Prerequisites

Humboldt TN electrician wiring boxElectricians in Humboldt TN can perform a multitude of services, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally around 4 to 5 years of experience is required before taking the licensing examination. The exams commonly test electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be acquired in various specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases includes 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you select not only furnishes a solid academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may be required to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Programs Online

Humboldt TN student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have considered is selecting an electrician online program to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online schools are becoming more popular as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not totally internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require partial attendance on-campus to receive hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes may be attended online, distance learning might be a more practical alternative for individuals that have minimal time for education. And as a bonus many online schools have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Commuting costs from Humboldt TN are also minimized and a portion of the study materials can be accessed on line also. Each of these benefits can make electrician online vocational schools more affordable and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Humboldt TN electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to narrow down your school options. Since there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Humboldt TN region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each school must meet. The initial 2 that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be critical when making your selection, there are additional variables that must be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to research prior to selecting an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician vocational programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Verify that the Humboldt TN school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you get a quality education, it may assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Also, many states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate might indicate that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It could also signify that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Humboldt TN students acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician businesses or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Humboldt TN area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Humboldt TN electrical contractor if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Humboldt residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Talk with several of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Humboldt TN, verify that the schools you are considering provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.
