How to Select the Best Electrician Technical School near Grand Bay Alabama

Grand Bay AL electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical contractor or tradesman is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Grand Bay AL. But with numerous technical schools to pick from, just how do you go about making certain that you enroll in the best one? Particularly because there are so many variables to consider. For example, some students will start by searching for schools that are close to their residence. When they have identified a few that are within commuting distance, they will pick the one with the least expensive tuition. While location and cost are important, they are not the sole things that should be evaluated. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, along with their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifiers should contribute toward your final judgment when picking an electrician school. We will discuss that checklist in more detail later in this article. But to begin with, let’s review a little bit about becoming an electrician and the instructional choices that are accessible.

Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Grand Bay AL electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to receive electrician training in a trade or technical school near Grand Bay AL. You may choose a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. Frequently these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states in order to be licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Bellow are short descriptions of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by Alabama technical and trade schools and require approximately a year to complete. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards students who want to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require 2 years to complete and are provided by Alabama junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at certain Alabama colleges, but are less popular at four years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be performed prior to licensing. Therefore, the majority of students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Guidelines

Grand Bay AL electrician wiring boxElectricians in Grand Bay AL can undertake a wide range of tasks, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically around 4 to 5 years of prior experience is required before taking the licensing exam. The exams usually assess general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be acquired in various specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you pick not only delivers a strong educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you may be required to pass in the future.

Grand Bay AL student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have looked at is selecting an electrician online school to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online training programs are becoming more prevalent as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not totally internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require partial attendance on-campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes may be accessed online, internet learning may be a more practical alternative for individuals that have minimal time for schooling. And as an added benefit numerous online degree programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on campus alternatives. Travelling expenses from Grand Bay AL are also minimized and a portion of the study materials can be available online also. Each of these benefits can make online electrician trade schools more affordable and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Grand Bay AL electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to narrow down your training options. Considering that there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Grand Bay AL region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must satisfy. The first two that we discussed were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be critical when making your selection, there are other factors that must be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to analyze before enrolling in an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician vocational programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Confirm that the Grand Bay AL program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you acquire a superior education, it may assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate could suggest that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It might also mean that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Grand Bay AL graduates secure apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician trade programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Grand Bay AL area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical tech you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Grand Bay AL electrical company if they can give you some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Grand Bay home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk to a few of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the teachers and find out what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Grand Bay AL, confirm that the programs you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
